Meditation and hypnosis in the form of hypnotherapy, share many of the same benefits. In fact, scientific studies have found that practicing either can have positive effects on both our physical and mental health. Both can leave us feeling more balanced and relaxed. Those feelings can lead to an overall feeling of well-being.

Because both meditation and hypnotherapy involve a trance-like state of mind, often described as an altered consciousness, they are easy to confuse. That’s because, hypnotherapy, at the beginning of the session entails the use of the same relaxation and deepening techniques that are used in meditation sessions. The goal is the same, to relax the mind as much as possible.

While this part of the experience is similar, the two diverge from here on out. In general, meditation is focused on relaxation and awareness of the present moment. Although sometimes mediation can guide the user through scenarios, generally it is characterized by the attempt to achieve an absence of thought or a state of mental calm. This end goal is also the primary benefit of practicing meditation.

Hypnosis also involves entering a relaxed state. However, the ultimate goal of hypnotherapy is more than merely relaxation. Usually, hypnotherapy is used to achieve a specific behavioral or psychological change, such as to stopping smoking or letting go of past traumas. This is done by creating a state that increases a person’s ability to take on positive suggestions. Doing so gives access to the unconscious mind, which controls many of our learned reactions and behaviors. These are often behaviors that regardless of whether they are positive or negative are automatically triggered in certain scenarios.

The aim of hypnotherapy is to eliminate any unwanted behaviors and replace them with positive ones. This is why once a client is in a highly receptive state, he or she is given suggestions that tell the person’s mind how it should, think, feel and behave. These suggestions are always based on the client’s goals. The more the Hypnotherapist stays true to the wants and needs of the client, the better the results will be.

It takes reinforcement to recondition the mind to make new thought patterns and habits automatic. That is why it is highly advised that the person being hypnotized be consistent until the desired goal is achieved. The same applies to meditation. The more a person experiences the relaxation and mental control that comes from meditation, the better off they will be.
